Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858 AD - 1937 AD)
He is said to be one of the pioneers of science in the world. It is said that he saw the light of the world before time. He is Jagadish Chandra Bose. Through this discovery he is known among the common people as having 'tree life'. Also his walk in different branches of science amazes us. He was both a physicist and a botanist. But Jagadish Chandra proved that all the subjects of science are connected with each other.
He was born on November 30, 1858. He was born in the town of the same name in Mymensingh district of present day Bangladesh.
His father's name was Bhagwan Chandra. Bhagwan Chandra passed the entrance examination from Calcutta University in 1858 with distinction. In the same year Jagadish Chandra Bose was born and in the same year Bhagwan Chandra was appointed as Magistrate and Collector of Mymensingh district. Jagadish Chandra's mother's name was Bamasundari. Bhagwan Chandra's abode was in the village of Radhikhal in Bikrampur pargana of Dhaka district.
Once a mighty robber was caught. He was tried in the court of Magistrate Bhagwan Chandra. Evidence proved that the person was in cahoots with the incident. Bhagwan Chandra punished him severely. The jail term expired. The man returned to his village. Prison accused, a notorious robber. The reader did not let him in. Eventually the man approached L Bhagwan Chandra. It is unthinkable for a jailed accused to come to the magistrate. After hearing all, Bhagwan Chandra gave him a job in his own house.
He was a close companion of the child Jagadish. His job was to take the child Jagadish Chandra to school and bring him home after the holidays. The boy Jagadish Chandra used to go to school every day on the shoulders of robbers. On the way, the gentleman told many stories of his robber life. In this way the child Jagadish Chandra continued to grow.
Magistrate Bhagwan Chandra felt very helpless in the misery of the common man.
Then he was the magistrate of Faridpur. There is only one district school. The common people of the district came and grabbed Bhagwan Chandra to set up a Bengali school there. At their request he opened a Bengali school. Jagadish Chandra was admitted in that school. It is a surprise that the son of a magistrate was studying in a Bengali medium school at that time. Everyone in the upper class was leaning towards English education then.
On the way to school, there were many trees and forests. One day on his way to school, he saw a shy creeper. His classmate touched the vine to see the magic. Immediately the vine fell down. This incident saddened the boy Jagadish. From then on, he would occasionally touch the shy vine to see how the tree was behaving. Seeing this incident raises the question in his mind, then does the tree also have life? Otherwise, how does the tree respond to touch in this way?
He later gained worldwide fame for his research on the subject.
Once he decided, he would not go to school on his shoulders from now on. His father bought him a pony. The boy Jagadish Chandra is going to school on horseback, this is a funny scene book!
Jagadish Chandra used to ask his father, 'When you touch the vines of the forest and the shy tree, you bend down. But mango, blackberry, jackfruit leaves do not behave so much, why?
The father would reply - 'Maybe not all trees respond in the same way. However, the sages have said that just as humans and animals have souls, so do trees. When you grow up, try to know more about it. ' In this way Bhagwan Chandra ignited the fire of curiosity in the mind of his infant son.Bhagwan Chandra was transferred to Burdwan for work. At that time the boy Jagadish was only ten years old. Bhagwan Chandra admitted his son to the Hair School in Calcutta. Later Jagadish Chandra was brought to St. Xavier's School from there. The sons of the masters used to study in this school then. The study was in English. So Jagadish Chandra, who was accustomed to Bengali language for the first time, had a hard time. But Jagadish Chandra, a ten year old boy, had infinite self-confidence. In just a few months, he mastered the English language.
In 1855, at the age of 18, he passed the entrance examination from Calcutta University. Admitted to St. Xavier's College. Father Lafoe was a professor of physics there. Father Lafo used to explain various theories of physics to the students by hand. Jagadish liked his class very much. He looked at her and thought, when will I be able to be a great scientist like him!
This time it was decided that Jagadish Chandra should be sent to the bill. Bhagwan Chandra's financial capacity was then declining. He has been on leave for a long time due to health reasons. Bhagwan Chandra did not have the prosperity to send the bill. Jagadish Chandra was only twenty two years old then. It was then that he realized that he needed to help his father financially. Thinking about what could be done, he thought he would have to pass the civil service exam in Billet. Bhagwan Chandra himself was a deputy magistrate. He knew how difficult it was to get a job under a subjugated government. So he did not want to let his son do this job.
But the mother could not agree to go to Britain at first. His youngest son left the world at the age of ten. Jagadish Chandra is the only resource of his parents.
Jagadish Chandra was very upset at his mother's objection. At the end of the day, his mother gave him a chance to go to Britain. Mom's jewelry didn't have to be sold anymore. By then, Bhagwan Chandra had recovered and joined the service.
In 1880 AD, Jagadish Chandra migrated to Britain. He was in great pain when he went to England. Everyone thought he might recover from the voyage. But the result is just the opposite. His fever gradually increased. One day he lost consciousness while going to see a doctor.
During this trip to Britain, two women gave him companionship and sympathy. Jagadish Chandra remembered them forever.
Arriving in London, he was admitted to the first annual class of the Medical College. I started studying zoology, botany and anatomy. Until the end, the professor of anatomy said, you can't stand the stress of studying medicine. When you come abroad, your body will get sicker. You get admitted in some other subject.
Dr. Singer was a prominent physician in Britain. He also examined Jagadish and expressed the same opinion. Disappointed, Jagadish Chandra decided to leave the city of London. Go to Cambridge and study science. Anand Mohan Bose was the first Indian from Cambridge. With his recommendation, Jagadish was admitted to the famous Christ College.
Jagadish was relieved by the clean natural environment there. However, the fever continued to go as expected. In the second year of his exile in England, he fully recovered.
Jagadish Chandra came to Cambridge and took science lessons. The first year did not mix with anyone. In the second year his personality began to develop. He started hanging out with other boys in the college. He started traveling outside the college. Joined the Natural Science Club. He used to read scientific articles there regularly. Everyone listened to his speech in the discussion on science. Thus the life of one of the best scientists in the world progressed towards its possible end. And at the same time received a BSc degree from the University of London.
On his return to the country, he met the then Governor-General, Lord Ripon. Jagadish Chandra started teaching at Presidency College after much hesitation in the last century. Thus his childhood and adolescence passed. Success also came one day. He made a splash in the history of science by discovering new information through long and indefatigable research.
Scientists around the world were amazed by his discovery of electric waves. Jagadish Chandra was the first pioneer of science in modern India.
At the same time when Jagadish Chandra was engaged in radio research, the subject of research of the Italian scientist Marconi was also the same.
Radio was invented by Jagadish Chandra. Although unfortunately he got the glory in 1896 AD. Marconi, an Italian scientist.
Life in the inanimate - this basic truth of Indian philosophy was embodied in Jagadish Chandra's materialistic experiment. Through experimentation he discovered several theoretical theories. Such as -
Photosynthesis explained the perpetual photosynthesis of the plant world with the help of bubblers and recorders.
Discovered the Crescograph instrument. This device makes the finest movements of the plant body much larger. The growth rate of the tree can be observed by increasing it by tens of thousands of times, this groundbreaking discovery was recognized by the leading scientists of the world at that time.
With the help of potometers and sphygmograph instruments, he proved the existence of life in plants.
Jagadish Chandra's first book, Responses in the Living and Non-Living, was published in 1906 and 1907, and he authored two books, The Response to Plants and The Comparative Electrical Physical Circle.
Jagadish Chandra was one of the pioneers of science in his mother tongue. His scientific essays on various subjects written in Bengali are also recognized as invaluable resources of literature.
1937 Jagadish Chandra, one of the greatest scientists of all time, passed away on 23rd November.
